VCRs are found in 90 percent of U.S. households, making them almost as ubiquitous as TVs. And with prices starting under 0, you can hardly go wrong.

Useful playback features Most people buy VCRs to play prerecorded videos. For this purpose, you'll want a VHS machine (preferably hi-fi). Check to see how many video heads it has. The cheapest models have two, while four or more allow you to freeze a frame or watch the action in slow motion. Other playback features to look for:
  • Auto head cleaner: cleans the video heads as your tape rewinds.
  • High-speed rewind: will rewind any tape in under two minutes.
  • Movie return: automatically rewinds the tape when movie ends.
  • Movie advance: skips over the coming attractions and takes you to the beginning of the show.
What to look for in sound Mono VCRs are great for the kids' room, but you'll need a hi-fi model (and more speakers) if you want to experience surround sound (or even basic stereo). Another sound feature to look for is a built-in spatializer, a sound-enhancement circuit that adds depth to the soundtrack. A spatializer is a good way to go if you want better sound but don't want to spring for a full home theater setup.

Tip: Hi-fi VCRs can make higher quality audio recordings than stereo cassette recorders - similar to digital audiotape in fidelity.
