Corporate History

Prime Focus has an unparalleled legacy of redefining the Media and Entertainment industry through creativity, innovation, and a history of firsts. From humble beginnings in a garage in Mumbai to becoming the world’s largest independent media powerhouse, our journey is marked by groundbreaking milestones, industry-leading achievements, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Beginning (1997–2008): Laying the Foundation

In 1997, Namit Malhotra founded Prime Focus in a garage in Mumbai with a vision to redefine storytelling through innovation. Over the next decade, we introduced several industry-first technologies in India, including India’s first Digital Intermediate (DI) system. In 2006, Prime Focus went public on the BSE and NSE, becoming India’s first visual entertainment services company to do so. Shortly after, we expanded our global presence, entering the UK and US markets through strategic acquisitions. The launch of our technology division, Prime Focus Technologies, further cemented our commitment to pushing creative and technological boundaries.

Expansion (2009–2014): Breaking Barriers

This era marked Prime Focus’s rapid global expansion and technological breakthroughs. We introduced transformative solutions, including CLEAR (2009), an AI-powered, Cloud-Enabled Media Services Platform, and View-D™, a revolutionary stereo 3D conversion process.

In 2010, we became the first company to convert an entire Hollywood film into 3D. In 2014, Prime Focus acquired visual effects house Double Negative (DNEG), elevating industry standards and securing Prime Focus’s position as the world’s largest integrated media services powerhouse.

Leadership (2015–2020): Redefining Excellence

With a vision to push creative and technological boundaries, Prime Focus entered a new era of growth and innovation. As demand surged, DNEG expanded its global footprint, establishing studios in Vancouver, Montreal, Mumbai, Chennai, and Los Angeles.

In 2019 we launched a new VFX and animation brand - ReDefine - to bring high-quality, tailored creative services to a wider audience, leveraging DNEG’s market-leading technology infrastructure. We also ventured into music with JAM8, broadening our creative impact and service portfolio in India.

Along the way, our work earned multiple Academy Awards®, BAFTAs, and VES Awards for films such as Interstellar, Blade Runner 2049, and First Man.

Trailblazing (2021 and Beyond): Shaping the Future

Prime Focus continues to push boundaries, setting new benchmarks in storytelling and technology. In 2022, we played a pivotal role in producing Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva, further showcasing our ability to bring larger-than-life stories to the big screen.

In the last few years, DNEG has earned Academy Awards® for its work on TENET, Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, bringing its tally of Oscars® to eight. We also expanded globally with new studios in Toronto, Sydney, and Bangalore, fostering creative talent worldwide.

Looking ahead, our expansions into Immersive Experiences, Gaming, and AI, signal our dedication to shaping the future of entertainment for generations to come.
